The Big Poppy Knit with The Abbey Church of Dunfermline & Sew Yarn Crafty

Q&A

  • You can send or bring your finished poppies to: Sew Yarn Crafty & The Sew Studio on Dunfermline High Street or to The Abbey Church of Dunfermline. The final date for receipt of any poppies for display is Wednesday 31st October to allow for the display to be completed.
  • There is no need to add brooch pins to the back of the poppies, however if you have already done so, that’s not a problem.
  • After the Dunfermline Big Poppy Knit display has taken place, poppies will be donated to Poppy Scotland for resale in next year’s appeal.
  • If you cannot knit/crochet poppies but would like to contribute, you can also purchase a poppy- making pack and ask a friend who knits to help. We hope to arrange some group knitting events between now and the end of October where we can all work together to create the poppies! Dates will be posted on The Abbey Church and Sew Yarn Crafty Facebook pages.
  • We would love you to come along and enjoy the exhibition when it opens – keep an eye out on The Abbey Church & Sew Yarn Crafty Facebook pages for dates & times. It will be possible during the exhibition to ‘dedicate’ a poppy to a loved one and make a donation to Poppy Scotland if you wish.
  • What yarn should I use? For the best finish, knit with a Double Knit (DK yarn) in red for the main poppy and black yarn or buttons for the centres. The size of needle you choose will determine how big the poppy will be, but we recommend 3.5mm or 3.75mm (UK9), or a 3.5mm – 4mm crochet hook. If you would like to add the occasional white poppy you are welcome. We would like to work with mainly red poppies for the display, with occasional white ones.
